Under the auspices of the Book Club we were delighted to welcome Hugh Johnson to the Club to talk about his publishing career, neatly tied to dinner and very special wines. He gave a fascinating insight how one led to the other and how he became an advocate of Hungarian wines, two of which featured in the dinner alongside a wonderful example from France Phelan Segur and America Silverado and the superb Nyetimber Brut Cuvee 2009 that started the evening. A veritable international wine fest with brilliant food prepared by the Club Chef Michael Garcia, who rose to the challenge of the parings. The menu and wines can be seen here. Of the Juhfark from Somloi, Hugh’s description … “stays in your mind and stays in your mouth” summed it up, a beautiful wine holding its own against a Premier Cru Chablis. The Phelan Segur from 2003 was able to allay the fears of those who worry about that unique vintage which was so hot. Of course no evening with Hugh Johnson would be with his beloved Tokaji, we tasted the Royal Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos 2008, whilst sweet it had a dry finish which entices one to seek more! Which was how the evening finished, wanting more of his eloquence on a subject so dear to so many.
