Last month’s blog finished with taking a look at the one-minute video of the Caledonian Club Tour overview showing all eight functions rooms. It proved to be rather popular, so we thought we’d dig into the history of the club a little more while temporarily closed. If you missed last month’s blog, you could read it here.
Those who follow the ‘CalClubEvents’ social media platforms will see the origin of the club recently mentioned. Great if you are new to the club and love a bit of London history plus the regulars are taking comfort in being reminded of one of their favourite London venues (If not THE favourite in some cases and we look forward welcoming you back when we can).
The Caledonian Club has been in Halkin Street since 1946, before that the Members resided in St James Square and moved to Halkin Street due to the unfortunate bombing of the original clubhouse during the war. The Club was founded in 1891 by Neville Campbell who lived and ran the Club from his own home in St James’s Square. In 1917 the club become a Private Club under the leadership of the Marquis of Tullibardine who was known to be a rather energetic leader. He was keen to ensure the club was the National Club and headquarter for Scots in London taking on the active membership that had started back in 1891.
The Caledonian Club has always been considered to be one of the friendliest Clubs in the Capital. The membership is strong with opportunities for non-members to use the eight function rooms suitable for conferences, events and weddings as well as the 39 cosy bedrooms. Since 2006 however non-members have been able to utilise the club or what some call their ‘London Downton’ with the sweeping staircase and grandeur ceilings (mandatory in any traditional manor house obviously). Dry Hire of the entire club is permitted and an option that may be more favourable in the current climate.
In 2006 a new extension was added to the club to provide more function rooms, more bedrooms and the intimate outside terrace, it was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Philip. More on that in next month’s blog.
