‘Some hae meat and canna eat, and some wad eat that want it; but we hae meat, and we can eat, sae let the Lord be thankit’ Robert Burns (1759 – 1796)

Burns Night is an important date in any Scottish social calendar; annually celebrated on or around January 25th, it commemorates the life of Scotland’s most famous poet Robert Burns, who was born in Alloway, near Ayr in 1759. The first Burns supper was held in July 1801 when nine of Burns’ close friends got together to mark the fifth anniversary of their dear friend’s death. Taking place at Burns Cottage in Alloway, the night included a delicious meal of haggis, performances of Burns’ work and a speech in honour of the great Bard himself. The night was such a resounding success they decided to hold it again, marking the start of the tradition we still enjoy to this day.

Last month has seen a number of Burns Night celebrations take place at The Caledonian Club, where guests, members and non-members have all been warmly welcomed to the Club to experience a little bit of Scotland, in the heart of London. With our menu offering traditional dishes such as Cockburn of Dingwall Haggis with a Neeps nip of whisky followed by desserts such as cranachan with honey and our Club malt ice cream; guests have been treated to the very best in Scottish hospitality with a night of fine dining, music and revelry.

As one of the finest Scottish venues in our capital and with a varied choice of private dining and meeting spaces available, our doors are also open throughout the whole calendar year for event hire. From the recently refurbished Glengoyne Room that can accommodate smaller meetings or dinners for up to 8 guests, to the impressive Johnnie Walker Room with a seated capacity of 120 or standing capacity of 250, The Caledonian Club offers both members and non-members a fabulous location to meet, dine or network in style. Our experienced events team is on hand to advise what has worked historically at the Club and would love to welcome you and your guests through our doors and extend the warm welcome that the Scots are so well known for!
